Fighting Global Warming - My Way Just a moment ago I watched a new interesting tv commercial about efforts made by international community lead by a well-known company in fighting global warming throughout the world. Actually, there are few other similar content advertisements that keep appearing before or in between of my favourite tv show from other companies. Most of the time the advertisements will promote efficient usage of energy and water, recycling activities and greening the world. I don't know now but before I went to Australia last December, this kind of advertisements was rarely seen in Malaysian tv channels. The only advertisement that I can remember of is from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. It was about people polluting river with domestic garbage without properly dispose them off. I think we should acknowledge the efforts made by the Australian private sectors in promoting environmental consciousness among the community. For sure this kind of campaign will benefit the country and the world in general. So, I am wondering what should and could I do in joining the campaign. Then I realised that since my arrival in Australia, I have done and still doing the basic things such as recycling, and using energy and water prudently. Actually the activities I mentioned above are not the direct effect of my consciousness in fighting global warming. I am just obeying rules (there is recycling and water saving rules here) and also to save money by reducing the energy and water bills. The following are the basic activities that I am currently carrying out at my home (not in any particular order): 1. Using only Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs with low wattage throughout my house 2. Turning off lights when I am not using the room 3. Switching off tv at the unit when I am not watching it (not just switch it off using the remote control) 4. Using only cold water cycles for washing machine rather than hot or warm cycle 5. Using washing machine only when it has full load 6. Using clotheslines to dry clothes instead of using dryer 7. Setting gas heater temperature not more than 23 degrees Celsius 8. Using solar lights for outdoor light 9. Having shorter shower to save water and reduce hot water cost 10. Didn't leave tap running when brushing teeth 11. Separating recyclable items from other domestic garbage 12. Never wash my car at home So, with your own way, let's save the environment and fight the global warming together. You have the power ...
