International Mother Language Day Celebration
Yesterday I went to my daughters' school at about 3 PM to pick them up. To my surprise, the whole school was decorated beautifully with flags from many other countries such as Italy, Greece, China etc. In addition to that most of the walls outside the classrooms were posted with posters and drawings. The posters and drawings were made by the school children with the main theme was language. But, when I looked closer, the language used was not English. They were Japanese, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, German, French, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese and many other languages that I didn't recognize. The children translated the English words such as Hello and Welcome to those languages. They were also encouraged to teach their friends about their own languages. What a creative activity.
Then at the school information board I read something which was very interesting and informative. From the reading I found out that yesterday was International Mother Language Day which was celebrated on the 21 February every year since 2000. And starting from this year, also marked the start of International Year of Languages which was coordinated by UNESCO.
I never realized about the importance of yesterday, and I believed most of people out there didn't realized it too. And I believe that school children in Malaysia also didn't know about International Mother Language Day. |
